Empac standardisation commission NR 5

Christian Walbrou
Chairman
Olivier Draullette
Secretary

This commission deals with the standardization at European (CEN) and international (ISO) level of the General Line metal containers.

It has been officially recognized by CEN to set up the European drafts standards in this field and to proceed with the revision of these same standards.

The members of the NR5 commission are the experts of main metal can manufacturers within the European Union.

At this time, there are several CEN standards in the field of the General Line metal containers :
  • EN IS0 90 part 2 : Definitions ad determination of dimensions and capacities.
  • EN 13025 : Nominal filling volumes for round cylindrical and tapered general use metal containers up to 40 000 ml.
  • EN 13026 : Nominal filling volumes for non-round, cylindrical and tapered general use metal containers up to 30 000 ml.
  • EN 13029 : Apertures for plug-in plastic closures.
  • EN ISO 8317 : Child resistant packaging : Requirements and testing procedures for reclosable packages.
  • EN 862 : Child resistant packaging : Requirements and testing procedure for non reclosable packages for non pharmaceutical products.

The following European standards are dealing with the aerosols containers :
  • EN ISO 90 part 3 : Definitions and determination of dimensions and capacities.
  • EN 14851 : Aerosol foam flammability test.
  • EN 14852 : Determination of the ignition distance of the spray jet.
  • EN 14853 : Enclosed space ignition test.
  • EN 15006 : Aluminium containers - Dimensions of the 25,4 mm aperture.
  • EN 15007 : Tinplate containers - Dimensions of 2 and 3 pieces cans.
  • EN 15008 : Aluminium containers - Dimensions of 1 piece cans with 25,4 mm aperture.
  • EN 15009 : Compartmented aerosol containers.

Besides three recommendations have been set up by our old European Organization SEFEL* (hat has been now superseded by the new Organization Empac) in this same scope "General Line Containers" :
  1. SEFEL Recommendation n° 2 :
Rectangular general line metal containers from 250 ml up to 2 000 ml.
  2. SEFEL Recommendation n° 3 :
Rectangular and troncopyramidal general line containers from 2 000 ml up to 30 000 ml.
  3. SEFEL Recommendation n° 9 :
Performance test methods for general use containers.

An other important item of work of this Commission is to monitor the evolution of the European reglementation when it refers to the General Line metal containers and, if necessary, to make recommendations for the interest of our industry.
