This commission deals with the standardization at European (CEN) and international (ISO) level of open-top round and non-round cans for food and beverage.

The members of this commission are experts from main metal can manufacturers within the European Union.

At this time, there are three European standards in the field of the open-top round and non-round cans :

• EN ISO 90 part 1 : Definitions and determination of dimensions and capacities.
• EN 13027 : Open-top round cans defined by their nominal gross-lidded capacity.
• EN 13028 : Round open-top cans for beverage products with added gas, defined by their nominal filling volumes.

The NR4 commission has recently set up an Empac Recommendation dealing with the use of plastic materials for packaging metal end components as destined for use on metal cans in the food processing industry (excluding beverage cans).

Finally, the Empac NR4 commission is responsible for monitoring the evolution of the European legislation within this field and to make recommendations, if necessary, to safeguard the interests of our Industry.
